JUSTIN KELLY (JK)

Greater Richmond SCAN is the only local nonprofit organization dedicated solely to the prevention and treatment of child abuse and neglect in the Greater Richmond area. SCAN was founded in 1991 in response to the rapidly growing rate of child abuse and neglect in the City of Richmond and the surrounding counties.
How does SCAN help keep children safe?
SCAN provides the awareness, support, advocacy, treatment and education needed to enhance the lives of children. SCAN’s services promote positive parenting, strengthen families and help create a community that values and cares for its children. Our programs include: The Family Support Program (FSP), The Child Advocacy Centers (CAC),  Richmond Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA), The Circle Preschool Program (CPP) and Community Programs.
Who does SCAN serve?
SCAN primarily serves families from the cities of Richmond, Colonial Heights, and Petersburg and the counties of Chesterfield, Charles City, Cumberland, Goochland, Hanover, Henrico, Louisa, New Kent, Powhatan and Prince George, in addition to other localities in Central VA. During the July 2021 – June 2022 fiscal year, the Family Support Program served 330 caregivers and 24 children—all from families who have experienced or are at a high risk of experiencing child abuse and/or neglect. Our Richmond CASA volunteers advocated for 220 children in the Richmond Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court system. The CAC served 983 children and 689 caregivers through child forensic interviews, family advocacy services, and Trauma-Focused Treatment outpatient therapy services. The Circle Preschool Program served 18 children and 31 caregivers.

SCAN’s Community Programs, including the TICN (Trauma-Informed Community Network), reached 5,500 adults through various trainings on how to recognize and report child abuse and neglect, trauma informed practices and positive parenting.
