I have some exciting news to share and if you know me, you know that this is pretty incredible…. I will be growing a mustache during the month of November as I partner with M4K & Richmond Friends of the Homeless to raise money to support children’s charities right here in our community!
My Story
As some of you may recall, I interned with Richmond Friends of the Homeless when I was in seminary. In July, I was appointed by our Bishop to serve through Extension Ministry with Richmond Friends of the Homeless as the Director of Outreach. My wife Debbie and I have been longtime supporters of Richmond Friends of the Homeless and I am overjoyed to be serving on their team. I have witnessed firsthand the impact that this organization has on the lives of children in Central Virginia. I invite you to partner with me and M4K Richmond to help us change the lives of even more children this year!
M4K Richmond (Mustaches 4 Kids) is a volunteer-run organization, founded in 2003, to raise money for a variety of children's charities in the local community.  What began as just 2 guys who raised a few hundred dollars has grown to almost 200 men who donated more than $300,000 last year alone. Charities include:
  • The Children’s Hospital Foundation
  • Greater Richmond SCAN (Stop Child Abuse Now)
  • ASK Childhood Cancer Foundtation
  • Dominion School for Autism
  • The Autism Grant
  • Faison School for Autism
  • & others including Richmond Friends of the Homeless
I am proud to be growing a mustache this year for the Richmond Friends of the Homeless Team!

Richmond Friends of the Homeless was founded in 1986 with the goal of strengthening and enriching the lives of the under-resourced and homeless in our community.  RFOH supports underprivileged children across Central Virginia by working to alleviate hunger, supply tools to help children excel in school, provide enrichment activities and warmth to families. Below are some of the ways that RFOH serves our local community.
  • Nourishing Meals:  We serve meals  7 days a week, many to whom are children. We provide baskets that are full of nourishing foods to struggling families to prevent children from going hungry. 174,000 meals were served to those who were hungry in our community last year.
  • Back to School:  RFOH provided 377 backpacks filled with school supplies this Fall to children to help them have a fresh start to the school year. We took 55 children back-to-school shoe shopping.
  • Warmth: RFH provides shoes, mittens, blankets, sleeping bags and jackets to children as there are so many homes without heat, particularly in the Gilpin Court neighborhood
  • Health: RFOH partners with the Cross-Over clinic and other organizations to provide health screenings/physicals, vaccinations, etc. to children.
Last year RFOH…
  • Provided 82 birthday cakes for children who otherwise would have been forgotten
  • Taught 30 Middle School students basic cooking skills for healthy eating
  • Sent 413 food baskets home to children with inadequate food
  • Stocked the pantries of 40 families who had just moved into permanent housing
Thanks to RFOH, countless children are given the opportunity to attend a movie, go bowling, or attend other events allowing "kids to be kids."

Right now Richmond Friends of the Homeless is…

Preparing for a huge Thanksgiving event and Christmas party that includes a nutritious meal, Santa Claus and Christmas toys/gifts for those children unable to have Christmas/Thanksgiving any other way.

November 6th is Shave Day. Stay tuned throughout the month of November to check the progress on both my goal and my sweet mustache! I will post pictures throughout the month to document the journey. Please consider donating to this worthy cause as together we have a little fun and make a difference in the lives of children in our community!

It's Shave Day!
My goal is to have a mustache like my mustache mentor Syd!
Stay tuned to see how I'm doing growing this thing! Remember... I'm doing it for the kids!

Who wore the 'stache' the best? Michael or his mustache mentor Syd??
Who wore the "stache" the best? Michael or his mustache mentor Syd??
At the end of week 1.... the mustache is coming along... but the question is: Who wore it best? Michael or his mustache mentor Syd??

We are half way to our goal. Thanks to those who have already contributed to this worthy cause. To everyone else.... "This is for the kids. $50 is about one meal out this week. I challenge you this week to eat in this week and support the kids."
